The first day of WebmasterWorld PubCon Vegas 2008 was a busy day. Monday night there was a little gathering for some WebmasterWorld folks way up high in a room with a view of the whole strip. Brett Tabke and the WebmasterWorld staff hosted the event and there were around 30 moderators, S/O’s and speakers there. It’s become an annual event and a great chance to catch up with some of the new moderators, touch base with people you haven’t seen in a while and have a great meal and enjoy the first of many open bars during PubCon events.

Following the dinner, everyone hung around for a while, chatted, had a beer or two and got to know one another. Later in the night, a few of us headed up higher to the observation deck to get an even better view of Vegas. While this particular event can sometimes turn into a late night, I had to retire rather early after the dinner. One affiliate presentation was done well in advance of the Tuesday presentation track, the other one, well much of it came down to the last minute. There always seems to be one presentation that keeps me up till 3am the night before it is supposed to be given.

Fortunately, the rooms at Treasure Island Las Vegas are nice and comfortable and provide a good working space. By 3:30am the presentation was finished, by 4am I was asleep and by 11:30am I was on the podium giving it. It wasn’t one of my better presentations but it went ok.

If you’ve ever been to the WebmasterWorld PubCon you know it is one of the best conferences for Internet marketing. Search, affiliate, social, design, development and usability are all included in the mix. The conference is usually held at the Las Vegas convention center near the Las Legas Hilton and the Las Vegas Renaissance. When registration opens, you can register for PubCon online and usually get a good deal if you register early.

Last year the conference had a special deal on rooms at the Las Vegas Wynn for under $200/night which is a killer deal for that property. However after going into the Okada Japanese restaurant at the Las Vegas Wynn and getting served what tasted like dirty laundry water and being offered $8 bottled water as an alternative, I won’t be returning to the Wynn again.

If you are going to the Vegas PubCon, there are lots of great hotels and restaurants there. The Las Legas Hilton is ok, and the Las Vegas Renaissance is outstanding for those who like to come back to come peace and quiet in Vegas at the end of a long day (or an all-nighter).

The Las Vegas Planet Hollywood is a nice new place that used to be the Alladin and sometimes you can get it for around $100/night on Priceline and other hotel aggregator websites. It’s a bit far from the convention center but in a great overall location for the Las Vegas strip.

While in Las Vegas there are some great shows to go to. You can save some $$$ on the top shows at Ticket2Night.com including KA, Zumanity, BlueMan Group, Crasy Horse Paris and others.

It’s starting to be that time of year again for the Webmasterworld Pub Conference, Las Vegas December 4-7, 2007 so be sure to keep up to date with the official Webmasterworld PubCon blog. It looks like the conference will be at the Wynn Las Vegas which is a nice change from the Hilton and the Las Vegas Renaissance, though the Renaissance in particular is a fabulous hotel and provides a nice getway from the non-stop Vegas action at the end of the night. Get a great deal on rooms at the las Vegas Renaissance for PubCon if you prefer to stay away from the strip.

A lot has changed in the search conference industry over the last year or two. December 3-7, 2007 will prove to be a duel of two rival conferences; Webmasterworld PubCon Vegas and Search Engine Strategies in freezing cold Chicago December 3-6. This may be the first time the two conferences have been scheduled at essentially the same time and had to compete directly with one another. Danny Sullivan and Chris Sherman, the two search gurus who were to SES like Tiger Woods is to golf seem to have limited if any participation in the conference.

Danny Sullivan is off working on the Daggle blog as a personal endeavor. Chris Sherman is busy working on Search Engine Land as well as Searchwise.net while SES chugs ahead with no apparent figurehead.
