The folks at WebmasterWorld have just recently opened up registration for PubCon 2008 in Las Vegas Nevada November 11-14, 2008.

Early registration through July 1 is only $799.00 per person.
Register by August 20, 2008 and pay only $899.00 per person.
Register by October 31, 2008 and pay only $999.00 per person.
Wait till after November 1, 2008 and ante up $1,499 per person.

In addition to always having a GREAT conference, the cool thing about PubCon is that there is always a way to save some cash and register early so you don’t have to have a huge corporate budget to be able to afford to go. Yea, $799 isn’t a drop in the bucket for most people but compared to a lot of other conferences it is a really good deal.

There are some discounts for registering multiple people and there is also a PubCon networking only pass available for $150.00. There are not usually any other discounts available for the conference with the exception of a $50 or so off coupon available to WebmasterWorld supporters. I haven’t yet heard any mention of such a coupon.

Don’t miss out on one of the best Internet Marketing conferences of the year. Register for PubCon now and get the early bird rate of $799.00!

WebmasterWorld PubCon Returns to Las Vegas In 2008 – Registration to Open On or About May 15th

WebmasterWorld PubCon 2008 / No Comments

If you’ve ever been to the WebmasterWorld PubCon you know it is one of the best conferences for Internet marketing. Search, affiliate, social, design, development and usability are all included in the mix. The conference is usually held at the Las Vegas convention center near the Las Legas Hilton and the Las Vegas Renaissance. When registration opens, you can register for PubCon online and usually get a good deal if you register early.

Last year the conference had a special deal on rooms at the Las Vegas Wynn for under $200/night which is a killer deal for that property. However after going into the Okada Japanese restaurant at the Las Vegas Wynn and getting served what tasted like dirty laundry water and being offered $8 bottled water as an alternative, I won’t be returning to the Wynn again.

If you are going to the Vegas PubCon, there are lots of great hotels and restaurants there. The Las Legas Hilton is ok, and the Las Vegas Renaissance is outstanding for those who like to come back to come peace and quiet in Vegas at the end of a long day (or an all-nighter).

The Las Vegas Planet Hollywood is a nice new place that used to be the Alladin and sometimes you can get it for around $100/night on Priceline and other hotel aggregator websites. It’s a bit far from the convention center but in a great overall location for the Las Vegas strip.

While in Las Vegas there are some great shows to go to. You can save some $$$ on the top shows at Ticket2Night.com including KA, Zumanity, BlueMan Group, Crasy Horse Paris and others.

If you’ve got some great info to share with the Internet marketing industry, be sure to use the PubCon speaker proposal form pretty soon to have a chance at getting selected to present there.

Commission Junction University 2008, Santa Barbara California Now Open!

CJU - Commission Junction University, CJU 2008 / No Comments

Commission Junction University 2008 (CJU) is now open for early bird registration! The event will be held at the stunning Fess Parker DoubleTree resort hotel across the from beach in Santa Barbara. Dates of the show are September 16-18, 2008.

CJU is one of the best events in the online industry for the content, the people there (they know their shit – how to sell stuff online, not just how to throw out buzzwords), the food, the location and the atmosphere.

The cost of registration keeps going up every year and is now up to $995.00 which is getting pretty steep, particularly in a year when the economy is on the downturn. I think it was only $595 of $695 a couple years ago the first time I was interested in going.

If you are looking for a GREAT affiliate marketing conference to go to or just an excuse to take a business trip to Santa Barbara, then go signup for CJU today!

SMX West February 26, 2008 – Avoiding PPC Pitfalls Session – Amy Konefal, Addie Connor & One Other Dude

SMX - Search Marketing Expo Conference / No Comments

Just got finished presenting on the panel – Defending Your Paid Search Budget Against Fad Ads and am now in the Avoiding PPC Pitfalls session.

Amy from Closed Loop Marketing is presenting the evils of broad match and advanced match with some prime examples of why you shouldn’t be running all your campaigns on broad match.

It is truely amazing how much liberty the engines take with broad match from related keywords, stemming, and liberties taken with geographical targeting on local targeted keywords.

General guidelines to deal with match types:

Build out singular and plural terms
Avoid broad & advanced match on broad terms
Build out an extensive negative list
Pull the search query performance report from Google
Buy the most valuable traffic first

Then use AdGooRoo to get more visibility into your online visibility and that of your competitors.

Up next – Addie Connor from Course Advisor

This presentation focuses on account structure geared toward streamlining reporting, improving quality score, and improving all around performance.

Considerations when setting up PPC search campaigns include:

    Static vs. dynamic ads
    Display URLs
    Sales & promotions
    Budgeting issues
    GEO targeting needs
    Content vs. search
    Dayparting
    Reporting format & needs

Develop the keywords and ad groups in tandem while keeping in mind the landing pages and ad templates.

What to do if the account is inherited?

Quality score is combinations of ad text and keywords so if you inherit an account and preserve that, then try to keep the keyword and ad text combinations.

SMX – Search Marketing Expo Off to a Great Start

SMX - Search Marketing Expo Conference / No Comments

Remember waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day, when SES – Search Engine Strategies shows had just gotten started? The conferences were of a manageable size, you had a sit down lunch instead of a lunch it looked like someone sat on crammed into a little box. They had speaker receptions. If you were a speaker you could sometimes get an extra pass so someone else in your company could attend.

Well, SMX feels like a throwback to the good old days. They had a nice little welcome reception for everyone (not just speakers) with a couple free drinks and some appetizers (crab cakes & some kind of skewers with meat & veggies). I ran into Danny right off the bat, he seemed jazzed about the whole thing. The SWAG (Shit We All Get) bag was actually a backpack this time instead of one of the usualy conference things that is more like a reusable grocery shopping bag that is a aukward to carry around a conference all day.

Being out in Santa Clara California makes it nice as well. Feels like its about 50 degrees outside with a nice cool breeze. The sights are great. There are lots of familiar faces out here and many new ones. The convention center where the sessions are held is a nice short walk from the hotel rooms which isn’t so common anymore.

The hotel is nice. The HYATT has a flat-screen TV, the beds are comfortable and there is a nice view out the window. There is a gym on the 3rd floor so I’ll actually be able to work out. Since there are only two elliptical machines, I had to settle for a treadmill for 30 minutes until an elliptical freed up. On the road or anytime, it always feels great to be able to get in a workout.

The presentation is tomorrow, there are some more networking events and there will probably be more people coming in as the week goes on. It should be a great show. Look for updates here as the week goes on!
