PSIA National Academy - Going to Try to Go to Snowbird Utah In 2008
So I first started skiing on golf courses in Pittsburgh, PA. Back then it was cross country skiing and the favorite part was always going down the hills. Eventually I won some tickets to go downhill skiing and convinced the parents to take me up there and skip a day of school. By the age of 16 I was teaching skiing at 7 Springs Mountian Resort in Pennsylvania and by age 17 was a member of PSIA - Professional Ski Instructors of America.
Soon after joining PSIA, I read or heard about the National Academy. It sounded cool but was always remained in the back of my mind as something that would be cool to do. In the high school and college days I didn’t really have the cash to lay out a couple grand to go and wasn’t sure if I was up to the level of skiing & teaching at an event like that.
As time goes on, you start to think about it and realize that it is passing faster and faster and there is no better time to get up n’ go do the stuff you always wanted to do. We had a great ski trip out to Colorado, stayed at some villiage in Vail & skied Copper, Vail, Breckenridge, A-Basin, and Beaver Creek. I was looing through the special offers on the PSIA-E website, was reminded of the PSIA National Academy and decided to go for it. As with many things in my life, I got the application in at the last minute and got wait listed. Bummer.
In the end, things all worked out for the best. Karen, who was cordinating all the registrations, emailed a few weeks later and a spot opened up. Someone else cancelled so I got to hop on the opportunity to go!
To prep, I got some new ski gear from Sierra Trading Post. They have awesome deals on ski gear especially in the spring. An Orage Onyx ski jacket was about $150 including shipping, a pair of Spyder ski insulated pants was around $150 and and a pair of Karbon shell pants was under $100, all great deals and more than 50% off overall.
Delta had a direct flight to Salt Lake City, there was a special deal from PSIA for Canyon Express for a round trip shuttle to the airport and back for under $50 and I got to book a few extra days at the Cliff Lodge and Snowbird to stay and ski the Thursday, Friday and Saturday after the event was all over.
10 days of spring skiing in Snowbird, UT, here I come!
